Chef Roland and Jackie Laudico’s recipe for a happy and lasting relationship
Catch “Wagas: Mga totoong kuwento ng pag-ibig” every Saturday, 7 p.m. on GMA News TV. For updates about the show follow “Wagas” on Twitter and Facebook.
Chef Roland and Chef Jackie Laudico are a force to reckon with in the Philippine culinary scene. The power couple changed the landscape of Philippine cuisine and is behind successful restaurants like Bistro Filipino and Guevarra’s.
But before cooking up a storm in the kitchen, the two started out as good college friends that had a little romance brewing on the side.
After 12 years of being married, the two have perfected the recipe for a strong and loving marriage.
Start with a bowlful of friendship
For Chef Lau, it was love at first sight. “‘Di ko talaga malilimutan ‘yung subject na P.E. kasi ‘yun ‘yung first time ko na nakita siya na talagang nagulat ako,” he said. “[She was] totally different from the girls I knew. Kung baga, [she] created interest in me.”
At the outset, Lau already had special feelings for Jackie, but the lady from Iloilo seemed to only see him as just another classmate.
In an attempt to get closer to his crush, Lau set up a study group meeting at his house. Only Jackie showed up. “Ako lang ‘yung nauto,” she said.
“First time ko sa buhay ko na nakipag-interact [ako] or kuwentuhan sa girl na gano’n katagal, at tuwang-tuwa kami. You know, we shared common experiences eh,” Chef Lau said.
They became good friends after that. That one study group meeting became a regular thing, but neither admitted to having a special relationship with each other. Lau learned to suppress his feelings for the sake of their friendship. “Cool na cool siya [as a friend],” he said. “[But] I believe in faith and everything happens for a reason.”

Add a dash of kilig and a pinch of simple happiness
While some express their love by giving out grand material things to their partners, Lau and Jackie enjoyed the simplicity of their relationship.
Even in college, Lau was skilled in the kitchen. When they met to study, Lau prepared meals for Jackie. These simple gestures were what strengthened their bond.
“We’re very relaxed. Hindi kami pa-sosyal or materialistic,” said Chef Jackie.
In fact, the two weren’t in a fancy restaurant or on some expensive date place when Lau confessed his feelings to Jackie. When he finally mustered up enough courage to tell her he loved her, they were on the octopus ride at the Boom na Boom carnival.
“Very natural lang ang lahat. ‘Di kami ‘yung nagbe-best foot forward, it was never like that,” Chef Jackie said in her interview with “Wagas”. “It was always na we were having fun. Kuwentuhan lang kami nang kuwentuhan.”
Mix an ounce of commitment
In the late ‘90s, Chef Lau was going to fly to New York to study at the Culinary Institute of America. The long distance relationship proved challenging, but their commitment to each other was larger than the number of kilometers between them.
“It was a very hard time for us, kasi isipin mo, super close kami tapos naging long-distance bigla,” Chef Lau reminisced.
It even came to a point when Lau contemplated about accepting another offer that would require him to stay abroad longer than he and Jackie had expected. At the time, Jackie got really upset.
“Napaluha ako n’on. ‘Yun ‘yung time na [naisip kong] kailangan ko nang pakasalan ‘tong babaeng ‘to kasi feeling ko, kung hindi, mawawala talaga eh,” Chef Lau said. “She’s not gonna wait for me forever.”
Chef Lau turned down the offer, returned to the Philippines and started his series of business ventures with Chef Jackie.
On June 21, 2002, nine years after they began dating, Chef Lau and Jackie tied the knot.
Top with love and understanding, and serve hot!
Through the years, Chef Lau and Jackie have always backed each other up. Now that they have two kids and several restaurants, more than ever, they support and understand each other and continue working like a team.
“Ang wagas na pag-ibig para sa ‘kin ay ‘yung marunong mag-intindi at magbigay sa partner mo,” said Chef Jackie. “Relationship ito. You have to give way, give in, you have to understand and to support.”
“Ang wagas na pag-ibig para sa ‘kin ay ang pagbibigay-kasiyahan,” Chef Lau said. “‘Pag masaya kayo pareho, kahit ano pang hirap ang danasin niyo, you still find the time to be happy with that person. You will love that person forever.” — Donna Allanigue/CM, GMA News
