Basta Driver, Food Lover: three great carinderias on the road
By Cristina Tantengco
According to the late, great food critic Doreen Fernandez, the true experts on cheap eats are our country’s jeepney drivers. Last week, ‘Pop Talk’ put that statement to the test and tried three carinderias popular among jeepney drivers.
Joining Kuya Tonipet Gaba were food blogger Sumi Go, actress Alyssa Alano, and jeepney driver Mang Boni Sanchez. Here’s are some of the joints they reviewed:
Dannylicious 25 Rajah Matanda St., Project 4 Quezon City Here’s a fun fact: "Dannylicious" was named after the proprietor’s husband, Danny. Located near Quirino Memorial Medical Center, Dannylicious’ clientele is a mix of drivers, doctors, hospital staff and employees. Their specialty? Pork barbecue.
Each skewer seems to have been marinated for a long time—the flavor goes all the way to the center of each bit of meat. “Parang isang buwang na-marinate!” joked our guest reviewers. Mang Boni, who’s been a jeepney driver for 18 years, added, “Gusto ko [sa Dannylicious] 'yung barbecue nila, at saka yung Bicol Express at sinigang.”
However, Dannylicious’ indoor grill can leave customers smelling like barbecue. Most customers don’t mind, but for some people, it might be a dealbreaker.
Final Verdict: 6/9 Pop Points
Nelia’s Eatery Orambo, Pasig

Aling Nelia put up her carinderia in 1996, which now serves 15 dishes every day—calamares, liempo, and much more! Of the three carinderias we visited, Nelia’s was the most affordable: some dishes can for as low as P20! “Presyong pang-masa, kaya ‘Pop,’” said Sumi.
Nelia’s Eatery has a large parking area, which made it a favorite among taxi and jeepney drivers, as well as fastfood delivery boys taking a break from work.
However, our guest reviewers weren’t that impressed by the food. It’s reasonable for the price, they said, but the food wouldn’t stand out on its own.
Final Verdict: 6/9 Pop Points
Bulaluhan sa España
2166 Espana corner Josefina St. Sampaloc, Manila

In 1998, Aling Mariquita opened her small carinderia on a Manila sidewalk. Fast-forward fifteen years: Bulaluhan sa España is now a favorite among drivers and office workers in the area.
As their name makes clear, the house specialty is bulalo; it’s estimated that they sell 300 kilos of the rich, meaty soup every day. “Marami na akong natikman na bulalo,” said Mang Boni. “Pero 'yun talaga ang the best na bulalo.”
Alyssa loved the bulalo, too. “Sobrang sarap ng bulalo, tapos yung liempo … hanep, sobrang nakuha panlasa ko!” she said, adding: “Nag-take out nga ako eh!”
The great food combined with clean facilities make Bulaluhan sa España a must-try destination for foodies on a budget.
Final Verdict: 9/9 Pop Points
