‘Hair’ comes the ultimate comeback!: Understanding hair fall

Do you usually find your brush tangled with hair strands after you use it? Does your hair fall out every time you wash?

While hair fall is natural, losing more than a hundred hair strands per day is a sign that your hair and scalp are not healthy. Constant trips to the salon could help solve this problem but not everyone has enough time and money to afford expensive treatments. Learn what causes hair fall and find out practical ways to prevent it.

Hair fall cause #1: Excessive hair treatments

Treatments such as rebonding, curling, bleaching, and coloring expose your hair to harmful chemicals that cause hair fall. Similarly, using flat and curling irons, blow dryers, and too much shampoo and conditioner can also damage your hair.

Remedy: Strengthen and nourish your locks by using egg yolks and olive oil. Dermatologist Dr. Ma. Noreen Molina explained that both ingredients are rich in protein and vitamins that help prevent hair from falling and breaking.

Simply mix the two ingredients in a bowl and apply the mixture to your hair. Wait for 15 minutes before rinsing.

Hair fall cause #2: Stress

Pressure, lack of sleep, exhaustion, and anxiety can affect the way our bodies function. In fact, too much stress can prevent hair follicles from producing hair. When this happens, we will not have enough hair to replace the ones that naturally fall.

Remedy: A lime seed and black pepper combination could help solve this problem. Mix lime seed and black pepper and grind them together. Add water to the mixture and stir. Massage the mixture on your scalp and rinse after 15 minutes.

“‘Yung buto ng lime saka paminta, rich sila sa Vitamin C at anti-oxidants, which may also help sa pag-strengthen ng hair. ‘Yung hair follicles mas tumibay,” said Dr. Molina.

Hair fall cause #3: Unhealthy diet

Having an unhealthy diet may lead not only to drastic weight changes but also to hair loss. Junk food lacks the nutrients needed to keep our hair healthy so it is important to make up for these by using natural methods.

Remedy: Start by eating right. Our body needs iron to prevent hair loss, so include  iron-rich food like meat, fish, and green leafy vegetables to your diet. Pumpkin, sesame seeds, and almonds, which are rich in protein, also promote better hair growth.

Dr. Molina said that carrots and onions could also do wonders to our hair. “‘Yung carrots ay rich sa beta carotene na isa ring nutrient na kailangan ng ating hair. Then ‘yung onion meron siyang anti-fungal properties.”

Use carrot purée and olive oil for your hair and apply onion juice on your scalp. Let the mixtures stay in your hair and scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.

Excited to try these home remedies? Do not forget to consult a doctor for professional advice. “Dapat mag-consult muna tayo para ma-determine kung what’s really causing the hair fall,” reminded Dr. Molina.

Some say our hair is our crowning glory. Do not lose yours without a fight.
