5 phreatomagmatic eruptions recorded in Taal Volcano
Five phreatomagmatic eruptions, or eruptions from interaction between magma and water, were recorded from the Taal Volcano on Wednesday morning, the Taal Volcano Observatory said.
Interviewed on Super Radyo dzBB, Taal Volcano Observatory resident volcanologist Paolo Reniva said they are continuing to assess on whether the Taal Volcano will emit major eruptions following the minor phreatomagmatic eruptions.
The latest eruption happened at 11:56 a.m. and generated a 200-meter dark gray plume.
The Taal Volcano is still under Alert level 3.
According to a separate report by GMA News' Saleema Refran on Super Radyo dzBB, the first phreatomagmatic eruption was recorded at 5:18 a.m., which reached a height of 300 meters from the main crater.
It lasted for one minute and seven seconds, followed by a phreatomagmatic burst from 8:47 a.m. to 8:54 a.m. with a height of 200 up to 300 meters.
An eruption occurred again at 9:15 a.m. with a 500-meter eruption column.
Another phreatomagmatic eruption followed from 9:26 a.m. to 9:31 a.m. with a height of 500 meters.
The explosion was not felt in the surrounding communities, the report said.
PHIVOLCS said phreatomagmatic eruptions were expected during an alert level 3.
