Cadet Dormitorio died of hazing, says PMA

The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) on Friday confirmed that Cadet Fourth Class Darwin Dormitorio died of hazing, according to James Agustin's report on Dobol B sa News TV.

The PMA made the confirmation at a press conference in Baguio City presided by PMA Superintendent Lieutenant General Ron Evangelista.

An autopsy conducted on Dormitorio showed bruises on different parts of his body that are probably the result of him being punched and kicked several times.

The medico legal officer meanwhile ruled out the possibility that a blunt object was used to hit Dormitorio.

Twenty cadets are now facing investigation in connection with Dormitorio's death. Some of them are under restrictive confinement to ensure their availability.

In a phone interview, Cordillera police chief Brigadier General Ephraim Dickson said they already have three persons of interest.

"Bale dalawang third class cadets ibig sabihin 2nd year at isang 1st class or 4th year," Dickson said.

Dickson said the persons of interest are in restrictive custody of the PMA and are facing administrative investigation.

Asked on the Dormitorio's family's claim that the cadet was electrocuted, Dickson said: "Subject for evaluation ng ating medico legal kasi sila makakapagsabi kung meron ganyan. As far as I know, 'yun ang naka-record na contusions at aberrations.

The room of Dormitorio was considered a crime scene and other cadets have been ordered confined to barracks.

In a statement, the PMA has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family of Dormitorio.

The PMA also said it would file appropriate administrative charges and shall apply sanctions to all those who are found responsible for the cadet's death.

The PMA admitted that the unfortunate incident made the institution asked itself on how it can "be better as educators and trainers."

"Wrong perspectives and malpractices that may have developed in some cadets will be sought and corrected. The monitoring and reporting system for the overall well-being of every cadet shall be enhanced," the PMA said.

Dormitorio's kin, meanwhile, took to social media to air their frustration over his death and seek justice.

The Xavier Ateneo community, meanwhile, mourned Dormitorio's death.
