Fish kill affects 11 barangays in Obando

Eleven barangays were affected by a fish kill in Obando Bulacan.

This was confirmed by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional director Willy Cruz in an inteview on News To Go on Monday.

"Positive po may fish kill po tayo sa Obando na kinabibilangan ng 11 barangays na umaabot po ng 100 hectares. Nagsimula ito kahapon po subalit nu'ng Sabado, naobserbahan na 'to," Cruz said.

Cruz said the changes in temperature and the magnitude 3 earthquake in the area last Saturday could have triggered the fish kill.

"'Yung pagkakataon po na 'to dahil sa sobrang init ng ating panahon, posible po na tumaas 'yung ating temperatura at sinabayan ng ulan. Nagkakaron po kasi ng abrupt change sa temperature, very lethal po ito sa isda," Cruz said.

"Pagkayari ng lindol, parang nag-amoy burak. Ang mga bangusan po kasi mabababaw lang kaya posibleng nagkaroon ng upwelling. Ibig sabihin 'yung tubig sa ilalim ay tumaas, kaya 'yung ammonia diyan at other elements ay nakaapekto diyan at nag-trigger ng fish kill," he added.

Cruz warned the public against consumption of fish in the affected areas.

"'Yun bago lang po namatay, puwede pa naman po 'yan subalit 'yung may amoy na po, 'di na po talaga puwede," Cruz said.

He said water quality investigation has been conducted to determine the real cause of the fish kill.

"Direkta naman po 'yung ating ugnayan sa local government unit at sa mga mangingisda. Sa kasalukuyan po nagkakaroon tayo ng water quality investigation kung ano talaga 'yung nag-trigger ng fish kill," Cruz said. —Anna Felicia Bajo/KG, GMA News
