Vidal to make final trip to San Pedro Calungsod shrine
The remains of Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, will be at the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod for one day.
From Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, his remains will be transferred to the shrine early morning on Saturday, Oct. 22, which is also the fifth anniversary of the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod.
It can be recalled that it was Cardinal Vidal who spearheaded the cause for the canonization of the country's second saint, the young Visayan cathechist Pedro Calungsod.
Vidal, as the postulator for the cause, led the investigation into the life of the young man from the Visayas who was killed in Guam while doing missionary work with Jesuit priest Diego San Vitores.
The first clue, which Vidal pursued, was the information by a bishop in Guam of the presence of a Filipino in the documents related to the beatification of San Vitores.
Calungsod was beatified by Saint Pope John Paul II, and later canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in Oct. 22, 2012.
The remains of Vidal will be returned to the cathedral by Saturday evening. Interment is scheduled on Thursday, Oct. 26.
His will be interred at the Cathedral Mausoleum at the back of the cathedral on Oct. 26, Thursday, after the 9 a.m. mass.
The mausoleum, which was also renovated under Vidal's term, was reserved for bishops of Cebu archdiocese, including the Vidal's predecessor Julio Cardinal Rosales and the first Filipino Bishop of Cebu Juan Gorordo.
Meanwhile, the masses from for the Cardinal continue to be held at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral from October 20 to 25. The first mass for the day is held as early as 5:30 a.m. and the last and main mass at 8 p.m. — BAP, GMA News
