Ahead of anniversary, FVR urges Filipinos to embody spirit of People Power Revolution
Former President Fidel V. Ramos on Wednesday urged Filipinos to continue observing nationalism and to embody the "spirit" of the 1986 People Power Revolution, ahead of its anniversary on Thursday.
"The 1986 EDSA Revolution remains our nation's resplendent moment for it represents the best of Filipinos," Ramos said in a message, referring to the bloodless revolt held by more than one million Filipinos to oust the Marcos dictatorship.
Ramos was a key player in the EDSA Revolution when he broke away from the administration of then-President Ferdinand Marcos and pledged allegiance and loyalty to Corazon Aquino, who was installed to power following the uprising.
Through the People Power, Ramos, who served as military chief during the Aquino administration, said the world witnessed the Filipinos' unity in courage and determination, and their selfless offering of life and fortune to restore their democracy, rights, and freedom.
The People Power also served as Filipinos' opportunity to "make things right, to do things right" for what they hold as true and just, Ramos added.
"The challenge we face now is to keep ablaze the flame of nationalism and continue to embody the unparalleled spirit of the People Power Revolution. Are we impassioned and inspired by the spirit of EDSA 1986? Do we go about our lives guided by these ideals? Are we worthy of the risks taken and the sacrifices made by our countrymen?" he said.
Ramos said the Philippines' history is evidence that Filipinos could succeed in achieving their shared aspirations if they work together.
"The revolution is not over and the work remains unfinished until every Filipino enjoys the freedoms and rights embodied in our Constitution, our democracy secure, and we regain our seat at the table of the community of nations," he said. —Jamil Santos/KBK, GMA
