DSWD in need of volunteers to pack relief goods

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is calling for volunteers to help pack relief goods and other items, a Malacañang spokesperson said Thursday.

In a statement, presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the DSWD needs more volunteers to help in packaging goods and relief items in the afternoon and evening at the National Relief Operations Center in Pasay.

"Many of our countrymen have already given their assistance in packaging relief goods.  However, the Department has observed that more volunteers are needed in the latter part of the day to ensure the constant delivery of relief goods. The critical hours for packaging said goods are from 6 to 8 p.m.," she said.

On Tuesday, the DSWD said more than 125,000 families or 600,000 individuals have been affected by three days of heavy downpour caused by monsoon rains enhanced by Tropical Storm Maring.

Based on reports sent by DSWD field offices as the time, 125,024 families or 601,114 people from 503 barangays, 50 towns, 22 cities, and 15 provinces in the Philippines have been affected by the inclement weather.

Valte said that so far, at least 78,737 items have been packed, 50,881 of which have already been distributed to families and communities affected by the Habagat and Tropical Storm Maring.

However, she said that 78,000 food packs still need to be put together and that the DSWD seeks to complete 100,000 food packs by today.

Valte said volunteers may coordinate with the DSWD regarding the schedule and locations of relief operations. They may contact the National Relief Operations Center at 8512681 and 5111259.

"The government encourages concerned citizens and groups to come together under the spirit of cooperation and bayanihan, and help our countrymen recover," she said. — Kimberly Jane Tan/RSJ, GMA News
