A total of P85.167 billion with of smuggled goods was confiscated in 2024, Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio said Thursday.
“For nearly four decades, [the] Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) has been in the frontlines, serving as the intelligence and investigation arm of the Bureau of Customs,” Rubio said in a statement.
“In 2024 alone, the Bureau of Customs apprehended a total of P85.167 billion worth of smuggled goods - another record-breaking and unprecedented anti-smuggling accomplishment in the history of the Bureau of Customs,'' he added.
Rubio also underscored the need for continued vigilance in light of the emerging practices utilized by criminal organizations.
“We anticipate the same or an even better performance from our CIIS. Recognizing that the challenges we face are evolving, we must reinforce our anti-smuggling drive, bearing in mind that safeguarding our society is paramount,” Rubio said.
Meanwhile, the BOC - CIIS also marked the celebration of its 38th founding anniversary last Monday, January 27, with a ceremonial donation to the GMA Kapuso Foundation.
Rubio, Intelligence Group Deputy Commissioner Juvymax Uy, and CIIS Director Verne Enciso led the turnover of the cash donation, which will be used to build schools and bridges in calamity-stricken areas, particularly the province of Camarines Sur.
“This generous contribution was made even more meaningful by the selfless gesture of IG personnel, who voluntarily pooled a portion of their Christmas bonuses to support the cause,” Rubio said.
“This is a testament not only to the success of the CIIS in supporting national security efforts, economic integrity, and border protection, but also to their commitment of being one with their fellow Filipinos as many communities and areas face unimaginable challenges in light of the natural disasters that struck us last year,” he added.
The donation was formally received by GMAKF Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Rikki Escudero Catibog, who expressed gratitude to the BOC.
Top-performing officials under the intelligence group were recognized, including Director Enciso who received special commendations for the outstanding contributions and tireless efforts of IG personnel and agents.
Further, Manila Field Station chief Alvin Enciso of the CIIS-Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP) was also commended by the BOC for ranking Overall Best Field Station Office after achieving P60.5 billion worth of seized contraband and anti-social goods. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
