Marcos on ASEAN-Canada FTA: 'We will find consensus'

Marcos urged Canada to work with ASEAN to finally conclude the Free Trade Agreement.

VIENTIANE - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. urged Canada to work with ASEAN to finally conclude the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) during the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.

''Furthermore, we recognize the importance of connecting and integrating our economies and we believe that the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement currently being negotiated would present opportunities for both sides,'' Marcos said.

''We thus urge Canada to continue to work with us. I am certain that since all member states are desirous of this agreement, we will find consensus on all remaining issues,'' he added.

The Philippines also expressed gratitude to Canada for its consistent support of ASEAN Centrality in the evolving regional architecture, with Marcos saying that this demonstrates the country's ''firm commitment'' to regional security and prosperity.

Aside from that, Marcos is also thankful for Canada's unwavering support to the ASEAN member states in the field of health security, saying that this is of primary importance as a key element of preparedness and resilience.

Marcos also said ASEAN and Canada should explore possible opportunities aimed at advancing digital skills, science, and technology.
