US grants PH addt’l 25,300MT of raw sugar in-quota allocation

The United States government granted the Philippines over 25,000 metric tons (MT) of additional raw sugar allocation that may enter America in fiscal year 2024, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced Tuesday.

In a statement, the USTR said it was allocating the additional quantity of 125,000 metric tons raw value (MTRV) on top of the 1,117,196 MTRV it previously committed under the World Trade Organization agreement for fiscal year 2024 (October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024).

The US government’s MTRV allocation scheme allows countries to export specified quantities of a product to the United States at a “relatively low tariff.”

For the Philippines, the USTR allocated an additional 25,300 MTRV for fiscal year 2024, out of the additional 125,000 MTRV it is allocating.

This is on top of the 145,235 MTRV in-quotation allocation it previously announced for the Philippines for this year.

The Philippines’ last shipment to the US was in crop year 2020-2021 when it shipped 112,008 MT commercial weight of raw sugar. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
