Galunggong price expected to decrease as Palawan's closed fishing season lifted — BFAR
The price of galunggong is expected to decrease after the closed fishing season in Palawan has been lifted, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said on Friday.
At the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public interview, BFAR spokesperson Nazario Briguera said the fishing ground in Palawan was opened on Thursday after its three months of closure for conservation measure.
“Inaasahan na po natin na sa mga susunod na linggo ay itaas na ang unloading natin ng galunggong sa ating pamilihan,” Briguera said.
(We are expecting that in the next few weeks we will increase the unloading of galunggong in our market.)
“Kapag nag-improve na ang supply ng ating locally produced galunggong inaasahan po natin na bababa na rin ang presyo nito,” he added.
(Once the supply of our locally produced galunggong improves, we expect its price to decrease.)
On November 1, 2023, the closed fishing season for round scad or “galunggong” in Palawan started.
Sardines, herring, and mackerel fishing in the Visayan Sea, as well as sardine fishing off the Zamboanga Peninsula, were also prohibited from November 15, 2023, to February 15, 2024.
To ease the impact of the closed fishing season, Briguera earlier said the government was planning to import at least 35,000 metric tons of fish - galunggong, mackerel, bonito, and moonfish.
The importation would be halted during the fishing season. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
