Bakers call for P2 price hike on Pinoy Tasty, Pandesal

An association of commercial bakers is calling for a P2 to P2.50 price hike on Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal given the rising prices of raw materials for baking.

In Bernadette Reyes’ Tuesday report on “24 Oras,” Phil Baking said they were preparing to submit related data to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for their price increase request.

“’Yung usual na reason po is increasing prices of raw materials,” said DTI Assistant Secretary Amanda Nograles.

(The usual reason is the increasing prices of raw materials.)

“'Yung iba nga po nagsabi, tumaas daw po ang presyo ng flour so kami po sa DTI, kung ano man po yung justification nila, vine-verify natin yan using our own market data,” Nograles added.

(Other bakers told us that flour prices are also rising. But whatever their justification, the DTI verifies that using our market data.)

Panadero Pilipino (PP), a group of community bakeries, said the bakers’ association had enough basis for the request.

“Ang laki na ng panahon na naiwan ang presyo nito, to which ang DTI, dapat ay pagbigyan na ito,” PP President Luisito Chavez said.

(This is long overdue. The DTI should grant the request.)

While bread being sold at community bakeries was not covered by the DTI's suggested retail price (SRP), the department was nevertheless monitoring their prices.

“Ang binabantayan ng DTI pagdating sa shrinkflation o 'yung lumiliit 'yung item o nababawasan 'yung item pero walang pagbabago sa presyo, ay kapag nagiging mapanlinlang ito,” Nograles explained.
