BSP: P1,000 bill with misspelled Duterte name not legal tender

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Wednesday belied reports of a supposed misspelling of President Rodrigo Duterte's middle name in an official P1,000 banknote.

In a statement, the central bank said that the P1,000 banknote featured in a story published online is not legal tender, based on its verification.

"The serial number shown in the said banknote does not match any of the ones issued by the BSP for the 1000-Piso Enhanced New Generation Currency banknote," it said.

Earlier this week, an online article by Esquire Philippines noted that Duterte's middle name Roa was misspelled as "Boa" in a photo of the P1,000 bill posted on Wikipedia.

A check on the Wikipedia page as of the afternoon of September 30 showed that the image has since been replaced and updated to a version of the enhanced NGC.

The enhanced NGC banknotes were officially launched in July, which the central bank said features the latest anti-counterfeiting technology.

To recall, in 2017, a printing glitch caused a misprint in select P100 banknotes without the face of late President Manuel Roxas. —KG, GMA News
