Senate approves sin tax bill on final reading

The Senate approved on Monday night the measure increasing the excise tax on alcohol products and cigarettes, or the sin tax bill, according to Super Radyo dzBB's Nimfa Ravelo.

A total of 20 senators gave their nod to the measure.  No one opposed it.

The House of Representatives approved the bill on third and final reading in June this year and sent its version for the Senate's consideration.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier certified the bill as urgent to speed up its passage.

Authors of the measure said the proceeds of the additional tax will go to the Universal Health Care program. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/LDF, GMA News
