Jeepney operators want P2 fare hike, surge pricing

Jeepney operator groups have filed a petition for a fare increase and the possible surge pricing during rush hours, citing the recent increase in pump prices of petroleum products.

According to Saleema Refran's report on GMA's "24 Oras" on Wednesday, jeepney operators want to hike jeepney fares by P2.

Should this be implemented, non-aircon jeepneys will charge passengers a minimum of P10, up from the current minimum fare of P8 for the first four kilometers.

They will also charge an additional P2.00 for every succeeding kilometer, versus the current P1.50 per additional kilometer.

For aircon jeepneys, the petition is for the minimum fare to be set at P12.00 for the first four kilometers., and an additional P2.00 for every succeeding kilometer.

Aside from the fare hike, operators are also seeking a surge pricing mechanism during rush hours.

Under the petition, operators are looking at imposing an additional charge of P1 for the first kilometers during the peak hours — 5:00 to 8:00 a.m., and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

This will mean that during those hours, passengers of non-aircon jeepneys will have to pay at least P11, while those riding aircon jeepneys will be charged a minimum of P13.

Among the justifications cited by the jeepney operators are the recent hike in pump prices of petroleum products, higher excise taxes due to the tax reform program, and higher costs due to the jeepney modernization program.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has yet to schedule a hearing on the matter. —NB, GMA News
