Navotas fish trade resumes after 2-day strike
The Navotas Fish Port Complex is back in business after a two-day "fish holiday" in protest of stricter fishing regulations.
Fishermen, traders and vessel operators went on strike from Tuesday to Wednesday, paralyzing operations at one of Asia's largest fish ports, according to a report on GMA News' "Unang Balita."
Trading at the Navotas Fish Port resumed Wednesday night.
Over 1,000 fishermen from Navotas, Bataan, Quezon, La Union and Pangasinan held a protest action near the Senate in Pasay City to oppose amendments to the Philippine Fisheries Code, according to a separate report on Unang Balita.
Similar protests were also held in Zamboanga City, Bicol Region and Lucena City.
Despite the fish holiday, prices at the Mega Q-Mart in Quezon City remained basically stable and in some cases even dropped because fish vendors directly transacted with suppliers, according to another report on GMA News' "News to Go."
Bangus were sold for P130 to P140, tilapia for P90 to P100 and galunggong for P130 per kilo. Prices of tuna declined to P200 from P250 and blue marlin to P350 from P400.
Prices were stable at the Marikina Public Market as well even if demand was down as consumers avoided fish amid expectations that prices went up because of the protests, according to the report. – Keith Richard Mariano/VS, GMA News
