Photo essay: The view from within Manila South Harbor

The cargo congestion that has plagued the seaports of Manila seemed inconsequential when viewed from a different angle. This photo essay shows a more surreal side to the controversy, or perhaps it is just the effect of being in the eye of the storm – the eye being the Manila South Harbor in this instance.

The truck ban has been causing quite a stir ever since it was implemented last February. It was tagged as the root of cargo congestion in the Port of Manila and the Manila International Container Port.

Presently, it is seen to affect the supply of fruits, vegetables and other perishable goods in the coming months.

The Subic Port had opened its gates to accommodate container vans, but experts say it would not be enough. Other solutions have been suggested, from lifting the ban in selected routes, to creating a new port but so far, the issue has yet to be resolved.

For months, experts and officials have been pointing fingers and tossing out opinions on the matter, turning it into an elaborate hot potato game. Although it was more or less agreed upon that the truck ban didn't cause the congestion but certainly worsened it, it is clear that people are itching for the issues to be addressed. – With Analyn Perez/VS, GMA News
