BCDA takes over Camp John Hay, says businesses to continue
The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) on Monday said it has officially taken over control of Camp John Hay in Baguio City, following the Supreme Court decision ordering the Camp John Hay Development Corp. (CJH DevCo.) to vacate a portion of a special economic zone in the area.
The BCDA said it has taken over The Manor, The Forest Lodge, Camp John Hay Golf Course, CAP Convention Center, Commander’s Cottage, open spaces, and other areas in the John Hay Special Economic Zone.
This comes after the Baguio Regional Trial Court, in an order dated January 3, 2025, upheld the Supreme Court ruling and junked CJH DevCo’s appeal to prevent the full return of the Camp John Hay property.
Under the order, all land and improvements in the property, whether directly held by CJH DevCo., its subsidiaries and/or affiliates or occupied/held by other individuals or parties claiming rights under them, must be turned over to the BCDA.
“This victory is a win for the Filipino people as it paves the path for exciting investments and projects that will drive socioeconomic opportunities and protects the interests of all,” BCDA president and chief executive officer Joshua Bingcang said.
“As we open new doors of opportunity, more businesses may reinvest their capital in Camp John Hay and build upon the workforce; all while ensuring that the environmental and cultural integrity of the area are preserved and protected,” he added.
Businesses to continue
In the same statement, the BCDA said that businesses will continue to operate.
“BCDA assures the public that businesses will continue to operate and thrive in Camp John Hay. It is calling on all stakeholders to step forward, reach out, and work together to facilitate a seamless transition toward a better Camp John Hay,” the statement read.
Camp John Hay is currently home to the Baguio - Ayala Land Technohub, an integrated community in a 12-hectare property with 11,422 square meters of gross leasable area in its information technology and business process outsourcing campus.
To recall, officials of the BCDA earlier met with business tycoon Manuel Pangilinan to discuss potential investments in the area.
“Camp John Hay embodies the unique charm and character of Baguio. I have very fond memories here,” Pangilinan was quoted as saying in a BCDA statement.
“In helping BCDA, we commit to the preservation and enhancement of Camp John Hay’s legacy properties, and the care of their dedicated workforce. You are in good hands,” he added.
The BCDA ended 2024 with P11.3 billion in revenues, up 3% from the previous year, mainly driven by the joint venture deal for a 6.1-hectare mixed-use development in Taguig City.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
