Megawide to build Boracay Airport passenger terminal building

Megawide Construction Corp., the conglomerate which was previously involved in the development of international airports in Cebu and Pampanga, has secured the contract to design and construct a new passenger terminal building (PTB) at the Boracay Airport.

The company bagged the contract to build the new PTB of the airport — also known as the Godofredo Ramos Airport or the Caticlan Airport — from Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp., a subsidiary of SMC Infrastructure. Groundbreaking is eyed by December 2024 or before the year ends.

"This will be another exciting opportunity for Megawide—to be able to work with one of the country's largest and oldest conglomerates, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), and help realize its vision of a world-class facility at Caticlan Airport," Megawide chief executive officer Edgar Saavedra said.

"We hope to impart our engineering excellence and be able to integrate our sustainable methodologies to this landmark development," he added.

San Miguel Corp. (SMC) president and chief executive officer Ramon Ang in September said the group was looking to build a new PTB with a capacity of 7 million passengers. The planned facility will have eight passenger boarding bridges, and should be finished in less than three years, the SMC chief said.

"We believe that Megawide's track record of building key infrastructure through efficient and sustainable practices will help us deliver a world-class facility within our committed deadline," Ang was quoted as saying.

Megawide, along with its partner GMR Airports International BV, developed the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. The group has since divested its stake, allowing Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. to have full control of the gateway.

Megawide and GMR Infrastructure Ltd. also developed the Clark International Airport new passenger terminal building (CRK), which is being operated by the Luzon International Premier Airport Development Corp. (LIPAD). — VDV, GMA Integrated News
