NNIC: Charges for overstaying vehicles on NAIA curbside possible this year

The plan of the San Miguel- led group operating the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to impose fees on overstaying vehicles on the curbside of the country’s main gateway could be implemented within this year.

At the sidelines of the 2024 Aviation Summit in Pasay City, New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC) General Manager Angelito Alvarez confirmed that a group within the company is already studying the imposition of fees for vehicles occupying the NAIA’s curbside for a longer period.

“There's a group working on that,” Alvarez said.

It was San Miguel chairman Ramon Ang who floated the idea of charging overstaying vehicles on the airport’s curbside beyond 10 minutes.

“Sa abroad may time ‘yun (In other countries, they have a fixed time). If you stay beyond 10 minutes, P200. If you stay beyond 30 minutes, isang libo (P1,000) na. Pinag-aaralan namin lahat ‘yun (We are studying all of that),” Ang told reporters earlier.

Alvarez said charging overstaying vehicles on the curbside is meant to decongest the area.

“But that is still being studied… it’s not immediately,” the NNIC general manager said.

Asked if imposing fees for overstaying vehicles on NAIA’s curbside could be implemented this year, Alvarez said, “Possible, possible.”

NNIC — made up of San Miguel Holdings Corp., RMM Asian Logistics Inc., RLW Aviation Development Inc., and Incheon International Airport Corp. — took over NAIA on September 14, 2024.

The group, effective October 1, hiked parking fees at the airport. Perhaps, the most obvious adjustment which gained notoriety among the public was the four-fold increase in overnight parking rate of cars from P300 to P1,200. —RF, GMA Integrated News
