DOST-initiated group maps Metro Manila to support startups

A consortium established by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is mapping out cities and municipalities in the National Capital Region (NCR) to help startup businesses in the region.

Through the NCR Local Government Unit (LGU) Mapping initiative, the Strategic and Collaborative Alliance for Leveraging Ecosystems of Startups - National Capital Region (SCALE NCR) aims to identify opportunities for collaboration and support for startups in Metro Manila.

“The mapping plan will focus on identifying key elements such as community culture, programs, and enablers within educational institutions, as well as the number of startups in each LGU,” SCALE NCR said in a statement.

“It will also examine non-educational enablers like incubators and accelerators, along with LGU-promoted programs and their outcomes,” it added.

The mapping initiative aligns with the DOST's Regional Startup Enablers for Ecosystem Development  (ReSEED) Program, which also aims to create a five-year Startup Development Roadmap for the region.

“By empowering more startups to take root and flourish, we aim to create a ripple effect that will inspire a new wave of innovation and strengthen our economy,” said Russell Pili, Chief Science Research Specialist of the DOST – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology (PCIEERD).

SCALE NCR also aims to improve Metro Manila's standing in the global startup ecosystem ranking.

Based on Global Startup Ecosystem’s 2024 report, Manila ranks 81st-90th in the Emerging Startup Ecosystem group ranking.

"The Philippine startup ecosystem is poised to take off, with the digital economy valued at $6.45 billion in 2023 and projected to reach $35 billion within the next two years. This rapid expansion underscores the immense potential of our region's innovation landscape,” said Jay Fajardo, QBO Innovation executive director.

QBO Innovation is one of SCALE NCR’s Technology Business Incubators, a facility where business development services are provided.

“We are committed to supporting initiatives by SCALE NCR to further accelerate this momentum by creating a more interconnected and supportive environment for startups,” Fajardo added.

SCALE NCR is also developing a Startup Institute to help develop and enhance startups in the country.

Its pilot training sessions are scheduled on September 20 and 23, 2024 at Colegio de Muntinlupa.

SCALE NCR will launch its NCR Investors Network to connect startups, businesses, or projects with investors for funding and mentorship.

It aims to promote startup investment education and awareness by hosting workshops and seminars.

In 2023, DOST-PCIEERD invested P120 million to support TBIs in leading the establishment and formalization of the startup ecosystem consortium in each region.
