Ramon Ang listed in Forbes Asia’s 'Heroes of Philanthropy'


San Miguel Corp. (SMC) president and chief executive officer Ramon Ang was among Forbes Asia’s 2023 Heroes of Philanthropy, the sole Filipino in the list which highlights business leaders who donate from their fortunes and dedicate time and attention to their causes.

In its writeup, Forbes cited Ang’s donation pledge of P500 million to build schools for underprivileged children in Manila, and his personal contribution of over P150 million to scholarship grants and medical aid.

Ang, during the peak of COVID in 2020, also personally donated P100 million to efforts against the pandemic.

Forbes also cited SMC’s San Miguel Foundation, which has spent over P1 billion to put up five schools in Metro Manila, P14.8-billion worth of support relief measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, and another P3 billion for efforts to clean up rivers.

Ang was listed as the fourth richest Filipino this year with an estimated wealth of $3.4 billion, following SMC’s acquisition of Eagle Cement Corp.

Other listees for the year include Fortescue Metals Group founder and executive chairman Andrew Forrest, Minderoo Foundation cofounder and co-chair Nicola Forrest, Keyence founder and honorary chairman Takemitsu Takizaki, Midea Group founder He Xiangjian, Amata Corp. founder and chairman Vikrom Kromadit, DLF chairman emeritus K.P. Singh, and Bayan Resources founder and president director Low Tuck Kwong.

Also included are City Developments executive chairman Kwek Leng Beng, CK Asset Holdings and CK Hutchison Holdings senior advisor Li Ka-Shing, Infosys cofounder and chairman Nandan Nilekani, Packer Family Foundation founder James Packer, Rank Group owner and director Graeme Hart, Elang Mahkota Teknologi (Emtek) cofounder and president commissioner Eddy Kusnadi Sariaatmadja, Zerodha cofounder and chief financial officer Nikhil Kamath, and New World Development executive vice chairman Adrian Cheng.
