Globe launches prepaid fiber internet service

Ayala-led telco giant Globe Telecom Inc. on Thursday launched its prepaid fiber internet service that will cater to mid- to low-income segments of the economy.

"The product will change the market and democratize experience and access to fiber here in the Philippines… Around 60% of households don’t have connectivity, not because they don’t want to but because they can’t afford it [since] all plans are postpaid," Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu said during the launch of GFiber Prepaid in Taguig City.

The service is available for a one-time fee of P1,499, inclusive of installation and seven days of free unlimited internet access.

Fiber prepaid users can subscribe to the service’s pay-per-use promos: GFiberSURF299 for seven days, GFiberSURF549 for 15 days, and GFiberSURF999 for 30 days.

The prepaid fiber internet service can be accessed through the GlobeOne application.

With the introduction of the prepaid fiber service, Globe aims to increase broadband internet penetration in the country, which is currently concentrated in the A, B, and C income segments, according to Globe Broadband business head Raymond Policarpio.

"Seventy percent of the households are in the D and E markets… There is a huge demand for it. It’s really the affordability and other barriers," Policarpio said.

"We’re betting on GFiber Prepaid to be the future for the Globe At Home business," he added. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
