Globe to migrate select home broadband customers to fiber for free

Globe Telecom Inc. on Monday announced the free upgrade of select home broadband customers to fiber, after the company boosted investments in the segment by 189% in 2020.

"Globe is also migrating its qualified home broadband customers using copper lines to fiber for free so that customers can enjoy improved speed and better quality of connectivity," it said in an emailed statement.

The Ayala-led telco in October said investments in its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) surged by 189%, translating to a 158% increase in broadband fiber capacity lines as of end-September 2020.

Globe then said it increased its fiber rollouts by nearly 52% from the same period in 2019, with the capacity expected to increase further with the continuous rollout of fiber optic networks.

In the same statement, Globe said its system has already been interconnected with Dito Telecommunity Corp. to allow mobile calls and texts between the two networks, with fixed landline in the works.

"This effort is a reflection of Globe's commitment to fair and healthy competition in the telco industry, as well as its adherence to the rules and regulations prevailing in competition and telecom laws," said Globe General Counsel Atty. Froilan Castelo.

The two firms inked an interconnection deal to allow inter-communication of both their subscribers within their networks in February.

Dito launched its commercial services in select areas in Visayas and Mindanao in March, which it expanded to Luzon this month.
