Globe inks interconnection deal with DITO

Ayala-led telco Globe Telecom Inc. has signed an interconnection deal with newcomer DITO Telecommunity Corporation to allow inter-communication of both their subscribers within their networks.

In a statement on Wednesday, Globe said the interconnection agreement covers domestic mobile calls and SMS (text messaging), "enabling Globe’s customers to make mobile calls, send SMS with DITO’s customers without additional charges."

The interconnection is expected to commence next month.

To recall, DITO has set its commercial launch for March 8. At least 17 cities and nearby municipalities in Mindanao and the Visayas will be the areas where the new telco player’s service will be initially available.

“Globe’s collaboration with DITO Telecommunity is part of our commitment to improve customer services by enhancing connectivity among others. This interconnection also reflects the vibrancy of competition in the telecommunications industry,” Globe's general counsel Froilan Castelo said.

Globe said it is also finalizing an interconnection deal with DITO on the fixed landline space.

Interconnection among telco providers is in line with provisions for compulsory interconnection of authorized public telecommunications carriers under Republic Act 7925.

The law aims to create a universally accessible and fully integrated nationwide telecommunications network to encourage more infrastructure investments from the private sector that would benefit the consumers.

Pangilinan-led PLDT Inc. has also inked a similar agreement with DITO.  — BM, GMA News
