Cardona treatment plant eyed as short-term solution to water problem —MWSS

The Cardona water treatment plant in Rizal will only serve as a short-term solution to the water crisis in east zone areas, a Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) official said on Thursday.

“It will alleviate the problem but we will still have this problem because the demand is still too high compared to available supply,” MWSS chief regulator Patrick Ty in an interview with ANC.

Manila Water Company Inc., which covers the supply in east zone areas, built the Cardona treatment facility as a contingency for the looming water crisis that they have forecasted years ago.

“The number one project now that supposed to be on line is the Cardona Water Treatment Plant in Rizal. It supposed to be operation in 2018 but they haven’t started it yet,” Ty said.

Manila Water chief operating officer Geodino Carpio earlier said the Cardona treatment plant could have started operating in December last year. It was delayed due to some issues with the contractor’s design.

The delayed operation of the said treatment facility contributed to the supply shortage experienced being these days.

Carpio said the Cardona water treatment plant, which will start to operate this March, will cover 50 million liters of water per day (mld) to ease the 200 mld deficiency in Manila Water supply. —Joviland Rita/ LDF, GMA News
