BSP investigating Cebuana Lhuillier data breach

The central bank is now closely monitoring the reported breach of the personal information of some 900,000 clients of pawning and remittance firm Cebuana Lhuillier.

In a statement released Monday, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said it is now working with the concerned parties to ensure that all issues are addressed.

"The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has recently been informed of a data breach incident involving Cebuana Lhuillier (CL) which affected personal information of about 900,000 clients," it said.

"The BSP is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the concerned officers of CL to ensure timely remediation and that such exposed information will not be used for fraudulent transactions," it added.

Cebuana Lhuillier last week notified its clients via email that it detected unauthorized downloading in one of its email servers.

According to the company, around 900,000 clients' personal information — name, birth date, email address, mobile number, and in some cases, income information may have been exposed in the incident.

For its part, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) on Saturday said it is now investigating the incident. —LDF, GMA News
