NO NEED TO RECALL UNITS AMID SUA REPORTS

Montero owners urged to avail of free vehicle check-up

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Thursday urged all owners of Mitsubishi Montero Sport to bring their vehicles to Mitsubishi for a nationwide free check-up, according to a tweet by GMA News' Kara David.

This was prompted by reports of Montero Sport owners claiming to have experienced sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) with their vehicles.

The DTI also said there is no need to recall Montero Sport units as tests conducted by a DTI panel regarding the SUA "initially showed negative results."

It also said there is a need for third-party experts to fully investigate the Montero issue, noting Germany, Singapore and Thailand have labs for full vehicle testing.

One widely reported incident of SUA was caught on CCTV where a white Montero Sport was seen suddenly plowing through motorcycles in a parking lot and fuming black smoke shortly after switching drivers.

In another incident, a retired engineer claimed that he and his wife's lives were placed in danger due to the SUA.

Mitsubishi has repeatedly said that it was technically impossible for their Montero Sport vehicle to have SUA. To prove this, they recently conducted a stress test in front of the DTI officials. —KBK, GMA News
