Magnetic gates at LRT-2 stations to be removed Monday

Commuters on the LRT-2 will no longer be able to use the old magnetic tickets at all stations as the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) is removing the magnetic gates starting Monday.

In a tweet over the weekend, the LRTA advised commuters to have the remaining value stored in their old magnetic tickets transferred to the new BEEP cards. Commuters have until Sept. 15 to make the transfer.

An article on The Official Gazette said there are several advantages of the new ticketing system. These include:

  • convenience of using the contactless cards in LRT-1, LRT-2, and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) stations

  • affordable one-time purchase fee of P20. The card can be reloaded with as little as P12 to as much as P10,000 and is valid for 4 years and may be transferred to a new card

The new card, which was pilot tested at the LRT Line 2 stations in late July, is part of the contactless ticketing system being developed for use in all mass rail transit systems in Metro Manila. – Xianne Arcangel/VS, GMA News
