Legazpi City airport gets P40-M renovation

The Legazpi City International Airport has been refurbished for P40 million to accommodate more aircraft and tourists, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said on Thursday.

"Although operating as a sunrise-sunset (SR-SS) facility due to the ongoing improvement and installation of its instrument landing system (ILS), the airport can handle night landings and take-off but only on prior notice," CAAP said.

The airport’s single runway can accommodate commercial jets and military aircraft. It currently handles eight regular flights from Manila and Cebu from Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and CebGo (Tiger Air), as well as chartered international flights from China.

CAAP noted the passenger terminal can now accommodate up to 500 passengers.

Self-generated revenue from CAAP funded the improvements in the passenger terminal.

A new airport, the South Luzon or Bicol International Airport is now under construction and is expected to be completed in the next five years to replace the Legazpi City airport. – Tino Pamintuan/VS, GMA News
