Lafarge Republic expanding Bulacan cement plant capacity
By DANESSA O. RIVERA, GMA News
(Updated 6:54 p.m.) Lafarge Republic Inc., the Philippine unit of France's Lafarge, is putting up a new cement mill at its Norzagaray Plant in Bulacan, the company said in a disclosure Wednesday.
In a meeting on Tuesday, board members of the publicly listed cement maker approved the investment in a new grinding mill with an 850,000-metric ton (MT) output capacity per year.
"The new mill for the Norzagaray Plant will increase grinding capacity amidst a growing market. Additionally, it will enable Lafarge Republic Inc. to re-optimize its distribution network, including supply chain and logistics costs," vice president for communications Cirilo Pestaño said in an e-mail message to GMA News Online.
The company earlier said it need to meet the growing demand from the construction industry.
"Cement demand in the Philippines continues to grow strongly. After the exceptional 18 percent increase in 2012, demand growth is estimated to be sustained in the medium-term, to be driven mainly by a strong housing market arising from robust macroeconomic drivers and by infrastructure investments," Pestaño said.
The company targets to start operating the new grinding mill in the second quarter of 2015.
"This new mill will supplement the new mill for the Teresa Plant that was approved by the board in May 2013, with target commissioning date of January 2015," the disclosure read.
Last June, the company said it was spending €18.48 million or roughly P1.2 billion for a new mill in Teresa, Rizal.
In March 2013, Lafarge Republic said it will reopen its facility in Danao, Cebu to meet the increasing needs of the construction industry. – VS, GMA News
