Lucio Co's energy firm to put up mini-hydro plant in Oriental Mindoro

Union Energy, an energy firm owned by Puregold magnate Lucio Co, has partnered with renewable energy firm Sta. Clara Power Corp. to build an eight-megawatt mini-hydropower plant in Catuiran, Oriental Mindoro. Construction on the P1.9-billion project is scheduled to begin this year, and the plant is expected to be operational by 2016. The groundbreaking ceremonies for the plant, to be attended by Sta. Clara Power chairman Nicandro Linao, Union Energy officials and local government officials, will be held on Thursday. Linao said the project will address the power needs of Oriental Mindoro and neighboring areas, which have been experiencing power shortages. “Needless to say, it resulted in huge losses for businesses. We aim to address this concerns by putting up the Catuiran hydro project," he said. The run-of-river hydropower plant will be built on the southern side of the Catuiran river, which is one of Mindoro Island's major river systems. Its source is Mount Halcon, the island's highest mountain. Sta. Clara Power owns and operates the 1.2-megawatt Loboc Mini Hydropower Plant in Bohol, among other mini-hydropower projects, and has a 45-percent stake in the Amlan Mini Hydro in Negros Occidental. Union Energy owns 66 percent of renewable energy firm San Jose City I Power Corp., which is planning a 9.9-megawatt biomass plant in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija. — BM, GMA News
