Holy Week 2025: Traveling with pets? Here’s what fur-parents need to know

As Holy Week draws crowds to terminals and highways, more and more fur-parents are considering taking their beloved dogs and cats along for the journey instead of leaving them in pet hotels.
Pets are now allowed on public transportation after all — provided their humans follow a few essential rules.
According to Memorandum Circular 2020-003 of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), animals such as dogs and cats may be brought aboard public utility vehicles (PUVs), including buses and jeepneys, under certain conditions that prioritize safety, sanitation, and animal welfare.
Here are some reminders:
Before the Trip
- Contact the bus company first and confirm their pet policy before booking your seats. Not all bus lines allow pets.
- Check pet size restrictions. Some operators only allow small to medium-sized pets.
- Prepare required documents such as updated veterinary health certificate, anti-rabies vaccination certificate, and Travel Clearance from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) (if needed)
- Some essentials to prepare beforehand: pet carrier or cage with proper ventilation, pet diapers as they're required to maintain cleanliness during the trip, sanitation kit that contains extra diapers, wipes, disposable liners, and cleaning supplies
During the Trip
- Never agree to place your pet in the bus compartment. This violates the Animal Welfare Act and puts your pet in danger.
- Monitor your pet at all times. Keep them calm and secure throughout the ride.
- Pay for the seat that your pet occupies. If their carrier takes a seat, expect to pay for it.
- Respect fellow passengers. Minimize noise and keep the area clean.
Additional reminders for responsible fur-parents:
- Pets must be in carriers at all times.
- Only bring pets that are healthy and well-behaved.
- Follow all transport rules and regulations.
The LTFRB guidelines are in place to ensure a safe, smooth, and humane travel experience for both pets and passengers. By being prepared and respectful, fur-parents can travel with peace of mind—and with their furry best friends by their side.
If you're planning to include your pet in this year’s Holy Week travels, pack wisely, plan ahead, and travel responsibly.
