Siargao's Sugba Lagoon before and after Typhoon Odette
In case you've already forgotten the extent and severity of Typhoon Odette, check out GMA reporter Nico Waje's photos of Siargao's famous Sugba Lagoon before and after the devastating typhoon.
On Facebook, Nico put the photos side-by-side to illustrate just how badly Odette ripped through the island and damaged it.
On the left is Sugba Lagoon as tourists know it. The popular spot, some 90 minutes away by boat from General Luna, is beloved for its emerald green lake, lush mountains, and that jumping board where many a traveler have conquered their fears. All of that is on display in the photo.
Beside it is present-day Sugba Lagoon. The trees in the mountain are stressed out and leafless beyond recognition, the lake now only reflecting dark brown from its surrounding. And the popular jumping board, destroyed.
Typhoon Odette made landfall in Siargao a little after noon on December 16, Thursday. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the death toll from the typhoon has climbed to 407, with 75 confirmed and 332 up for validation. Damage to agriculture has soared to P9 billion.
As we welcome 2022, stories from survivors have started to simmer down, but the set of photos remind us just how badly Siargao — and Cebu, Leyte, Palawan, Dinagat Islands, and Bohol — still need help in rebuilding.
