Siargao reopens to tourists after months of lockdown
The first day of Siargao’s reopening after months under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic saw only a few tourists arrive to enjoy the island’s crystal-clear waters.
According to a report by GMA Regional TV One Mindanao's Real Sorroche on “24 Oras” on Wednesday, minimum health standards were strictly enforced to avoid possible widespread transmission of COVID-19.
Upon arrival, tourists need to pass through the health center to get their documents double checked by local authorities.
Many of those who flew in on the first day of reopening were returning Siargao residents and those employed on the island.
General Luna, the former center of tourism in Siargao, has also gone quiet after several stores and restaurants were shuttered by the pandemic.
“Konti lang kasi kasisimula pa lang namin. Hindi naman automatic na babalik agad. Apektado talaga kami,” boat crew Reynante Nier said. — Julia Mari Ornedo/BM, GMA News
