Duterte’s presence in tourist sites to boost domestic tourism — Palace
President Rodrigo Duterte’s upcoming visit to select tourist destinations in the country is a potential way to attract visitors, Malacañang said Monday.
Duterte may visit Boracay, Cebu and Bohol in the coming weeks as part of the government’s campaign to boost domestic tourism amid the coronavirus scare, the Department of Tourism said.
“I think so, yes. He is always a magnet. His presence attracts people from attending an event,” presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said at a news conference when asked whether Duterte’s presence would help local tourism.
Panelo said it might be unlikely for the President to take part in activities during the tour.
“Siguro pupunta lang doon to make his presence felt, to say hello,” he said.
Duterte earlier announced plans to visit local tourist sites and assured citizens that the country is safe.
He also said tourism industry stakeholders agreed to spur domestic travel through lowering of airfare and hotel rates.
The DOT said the guidelines in handling guests in tourism enterprises amid the coronavirus outbreak are being implemented in hotels and resorts around the country and facilities are equipped with infrared thermometers and more hand sanitizers.
Last Friday, the Philippines lifted the travel restrictions it had implemented on visitors from Taiwan due to the coronavirus outbreak, citing strict measures they are undertaking and the protocols they are implementing to address the health emergency.
The temporary entry ban for foreigners coming from mainland China and its special administrative regions Hong Kong and Macau as well as the 14-day quarantine for Filipinos and permanent resident visa holders coming from the said places is still in effect. — RSJ, GMA News
