Safety reminders for your next beach trip

There's nothing more exciting than that beach trip for which you've been saving up! Lazing under the sun, enjoying the cool blue waters — doesn't it sound like a dream?

But come to paradise ready. Before going on that trip, keep in mind a few safety tips. Pinoy MD dished out some of them in a recent episode.

1. Never go swimming alone, or intoxicated

An adult should always accompany a child when swimming. And as adults, abide by the buddy system to stay safe — you never know when you'll start cramping or worse, when tides change.

And a huge reminder please: We know beer and beach sound like the perfect pair, but please do not go swimming when you're drunk or intoxicated.

2. Learn how to swim before going on a swimming trip

It's so obvious it sounds funny. If beach trips are an annual summer tradition, perhaps it's time take some swimming lessons? It will help avoid possible incidents while swimming and will keep everybody safe.

3. Gently stretch the body part experiencing cramps

When a person suddenly gets cramps while swimming, it is important to safely remove them from the water and slowly and gently stretch the part to relax the muscles.

4. Here's how to perform CPR
Quickly carry them to the surface and check for any sign of breathing or a pulse. If there is none, immediately perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR.

Put the lower end of your hands on the chest and begin to give chest compressions 100 to 120 a minute. If there is still no breathing, quickly perform a mouth to mouth resuscitation.
