Ilocos: Where heritage, nature, adventure converge

It was around four in the morning when we reached Calle Crisologo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur after seven hours of traveling from Metro Manila. The hairs on my bare legs raised when I stepped out of our van. Chilly morning.

I could have just stretched my legs, but the flickering of the street lights were too inviting. My boyfriend and I started walking along the street famous for its old structures, going as far as we could, while other tourists got busy taking selfies. I remember taking a deep breath, trying to preserve that moment in my head. Am I just dreaming? The street was hazy. I squeezed my face. No, I am awake. This beautiful sight in front of me is not a dream, I thought.

That was my introduction to Ilocos.

Calle Crisologo was the first stop of our three-day trip to the Ilocos region. Our tour coordinator, Kuya Eric, said it was just sneak peek of what's ahead. He promised to take us back to Calle Crisologo when the shops are open.

In just three days, Ilocos blew me away. It became a southerner's favorite destination.

Its old houses and churches made me want to read more about history and all its plot twists and unresolved issues. The Culili Point Sand Dunes in Paoay, Ilocos Norte helped me understand what "thrilling chase" means. Unexpectedly, it became the riskiest joyride I have ever taken in my life. Pagudpod's beaches with its creamy shores and waves in different shades of blue were a visual feast. It can rival those in the usual favorite summer destination list.

Ilocos, I think you just showed me a wonderful part of this world.
