Bulacan’s Rhino and Lioness Rocks to be saved; site to be developed for ecotourism

After getting called out on social media, the authorities have decided to save a pair of rock formations in Norzagaray, Bulacan from quarrying plans.

Pinoy Mountaineer author Gideon Lasco said on Facebook that the local government unit, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and quarrying company Spar Development Corp. have all agreed to develop Rhino Rock and Lioness Rock's location into an ecotourism site.

"They are now discussing how to manage the area and open it to the public in the future," he wrote.

The limestone formations remain closed to the public to date as the authorities continue to plan on how to make them available to hiking enthusiasts and other interested parties.

"This is a victory for all outdoor enthusiasts, the residents of Norzagaray and Bulacan, and our country. Indeed we can do something if we speak out, united, about the threats our environment faces today," Lasco added.

Last March, he wrote an open letter to Spar Development Corporation to refrain from mining the limestone formations and to keep the area open to the public. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
