Sunken cemetery attracts tourists to Camiguin

Who says Undas (All Saints' and All Souls' Days) can't be for tourists too?

Tourists are flocking to Barangay Bonbon in Camiguin to see the Sunken Cemetery, where the tombs are underwater, GMA Northern Mindanao's Cassy Rosos reported.

The cemetery was believed buried underwater due to the eruption of Mount Vulcan in 1870, the report said.

Only the crosses of the tombs can be seen above the water, as a reminder of the doomed cemetery, though some of the tombs may be visible during low tide.

"So far we enjoy and (are) having fun," said tourist Dra. Edwina Cabato.

The report said the bones of those interred in the cemetery had been claimed by relatives and transferred to other cemeteries.

In the meantime, the province continues to develop the Sunken Cemetery as a memorial to those who died in the wake of the eruption, and as a piece of Camiguin's history. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
