Catriona Gray launches first ‘Enviro-Chic’ bag collection

Catriona Gray launches first ‘Enviro-Chic’ bag collection

Aside from being a beauty queen, singer, and advocate, Catriona Gray is now a bag designer.

On Instagram, the Miss Universe 2018 announced the launch of her first sustainable design project dubbed “Enviro-Chic.”

Catriona breathed new life into upcycled tarpaulins collected by Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, her collaborator for the project. Through the initiative, an estimated 9.9 tons of upcycled tarpaulins were turned into stylish bags.

“Each bag is crafted by talented Filipino artisans from SIDE B Upcycling Retail Inc., making every bag one-of-a-kind,” she said.

“This initiative not only celebrates fashion but also supports sustainable livelihoods and empowers local craftsmen,” she added.

The “Enviro-Chic” collection includes The Large Tote, an ideal carry-on for daily use; The 3-Way Folio, a backpack, messenger bag, and clutch in one; and The Essential Bucket, a compact solution for carrying daily essentials.

For those interested in acquiring any item from the collection, you may present 35 pieces of clean used PET bottles at designated redemption booths at Eastwood City, Uptown Bonifacio, McKinley Hill, Lucky Chinatown, and Newport World Resorts.

The collected plastic bottles will be turned over to non-profit organization Plastic Credit Exchange for upcycling and repurposing, helping promote a zero-waste circular economy.

Aside from the plastic bottles, you also have to meet the purchase requirements at any Megaworld Lifestyle Malls and present the receipts at the redemption booths: The Large Tote (P7,000),  The 3-Way Folio (P5,000), and The Essentials Bucket (P3,000).

The promo runs from September 13 to October 31.

In the Philippines, several initiatives have been popping up to manage or lessen plastic consumption.

In March, a barangay in Quezon City launched a trash-to-cash program where residents could exchange a kilogram of plastic waste for a kilogram of fish in an effort to boost the local government’s environmental campaign.
