Miss Universe Thailand wears upcycled dress made of pull-tabs of drink cans during preliminaries

Thailand's Anna Sueangam-iam wowed viewers with her recycled dress made of pull-tabs of drink cans during the Miss Universe 2022 preliminary competition on Thursday.

Called the "Hidden Precious Diamond Dress," it also has Swarovski diamonds among the pull-tabs.

The gown holds more special meaning as the candidate's father is a garbage collector. Her mother is a street sweeper. The piece was designed by MANIRAT.

Some have dubbed Anna "the garbage beauty queen."

Yet, she said, "You must not get stuck with murky surroundings you were born into, but do believe you have the power to change your own life for the better.”

Miss Universe Philippines Celeste Cortesi's sky blue gown also had a special meaning. Her father knew they would name her Celeste when she was born because Celeste means "heavenly" and "sky blue" in Italian. Celese is Filipino-Italian.

Using fashion to amplify the social issues that are important to her, Celeste also wore another outfit with a cape with hand prints on them, representing children who need help. She paired the meaningful cape with a hot pink bikini for the swimsuit competition.

At the National Costume Competition, Celeste sported a fiery red superhero outfit for the national costume competition.

The 71st Miss Universe grand coronation night is set for January 15 at 9am (Manila time) at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in Louisiana.
