Francis Libiran designs 'Agila' barong for Team Philippines in SEA Games 2022

Renowned fashion designer Francis Libiran is the official designer for the parade of uniforms of Team Philippines at the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

During the opening ceremonies on Thursday, May 12, Filipino delegates wore the Barong Tagalog intricately embroidered with an art deco Philippine eagle, symbolizing strength, power and freedom.

"As a Filipino who has dressed and styled different celebrities from across the world with my clothes, nothing will ever match the privilege of representing the Philippines," Francis told GMA News Online.

Francis named his barong creation for the SEA Games "Agila."

"I have thought of featuring the magnificent and soaring Philippine Eagle as the focal point of the Barong. I also used Philippine fibers and materials that beautifully highlight my signature art deco embroidery," the designer explained.

According to Francis, to be part of a significant sports event is an "amazing opportunity" and "incredible glory."

"As [Team Philippines] put themselves forward in the 31st SEA Games clad in my creations, I wave my flag as a tribute to Team Philippines and the entire nation," he proudly shared.

In 2019, Francis Libiran's iconic "The Flag" Barong Tagalog was worn by more than 3,000 Filipino athletes and team members for the grand parade of the 30th SEA Games held in Manila.

In addition, the historical design, which featured the elements of the Philippine flag in Francis Libiran style, was also made available to the public in limited stocks.

The Francis Libiran Agila Barong Tagalog will be available for pre-order in his website.

As of this writing, the Philippines has won 18 golds in the 31st SEA Games, including Carlos Yulo in the men's all-around in artistic gymnastics, Kim Mangrobang in women's duathlon, and EJ Obiena in the pole vault, among others.

Congrats, Team Philippines! And gorgeous as always, Francis. — LA, GMA News
