FATHER’S DAY

5 eco-friendly, ‘new normal’ gifts your dad will love, according to Dingdong Dantes

Still trying to figure out what to get your dad this Father’s Day?

It would be nice to get him something meaningful, but also something that would equip him for the “new normal.”

For this, GMA News Online asked “Amazing Earth” host (and amazing dad-slash-eco-warrior) Dingdong Dantes for some essentials, and he gave us some super sustainable gift ideas perfect for dads amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Tumbler

It’s important for working dads to stay hydrated nowadays but, instead of bottled water, why not get him a nice tumbler? Not only will it help him save money, he can also refill it anytime, all the while reducing waste.

Dingdong personally recommends tumblers made from natural and locally sourced materials, like bamboo.

2. Utensils

Imagine this: Your dad has to eat lunch in a public area, but it’s okay because he’s using his own pair of utensils that you gave him.

Instead of plastic spoons and forks, Dingdong pointed out that you could also find utensils made from natural materials—like avocado seeds—online.

3. Eco-bag

Eco bags are not just for shopping.

Some local shops actually make super-stylish man bags from sturdy recycled materials. “Maganda ’yan kasi, kahit papaano, minsan creatively nagagawan nila ng paraan na mag-mukha pa rin siyang stylish pero alam mong creatively done siya,” said the actor.

4. Electric scooter

If it’s in the budget, you can get your dad his very own electric scooter to make all those grocery runs and important errands much easier.

“I mean, if you have access to it, marami namang types of e-scooters and, personally, it’s one of my favorites,” Dingdong said.

“Isa siya sa mga madalas kong gamitin talaga, lalong lalo na kung around the city lang naman.”

5. Any essential item, but make it organic.

Dingdong has more gift suggestions, but his main point is you can get your dad something special that can be useful daily, but is also made from green materials.

It doesn’t always have to be something grand, though—it can be as simple as giving him a new toothbrush made from recycled plastic.
