Catriona’s designer Mak Tumang releases sketches for 3rd gown the beauty queen was supposed to wear
Catriona Gray’s designer Mak Tumang released on Wednesday night a third sketch featuring a gilded dress with blue details, which the Filipino-Australian beauty queen had planned to wear for the pageant.
According to Mak’s post, the gold and aquamarine number is called Perla Oriente. “The piece itself is an extolment of the Philippines. May we always be proud of our roots. May we always treasure and cherist as this is and will always be our ‘Bayang Magiliaw…Perlas ng Silanganan,” read a portion of Mak’s caption.
Speaking to GMA News Online, the Kampampangan designer shared that the Perla Oriente is actually a mashup of two of Catriona’s ideas. “Concept ni Cat iyon. It was a combination of the Warrior and the Sea, both of which was hers,” Mak said.

He added it was actually an option for the preliminary competition, but “along the way, we decided, Ibong Adarna na lang. Iba kasi yung dating,” he shared.
At one point, the Perla Oriente was supposed to be Catriona’s OOTD for the Gala Night of the Miss Universe but a quick change to the theme — it became Thai Silk Night — kept the Perla Oriente hidden from the limelight.

Mak told GMA News Online that Catriona actually brought the gown with her to New York, in case a Miss Universe function arises and she'll need a fabulous dress.
Mak made seven sketches for Catriona's Miss Universe bid. Three were made, but only two had their moment in the spotlight: the Adarna and the Mayon. — LA, GMA News
