‘RECYCLED FROM ASEAN’

Duterte, Honeylet attire for SONA inspired by Maranao culture

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday will be wearing a "recycled" Barong Tagalog when he delivers his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.

Designers Aris Escarilla and Bonie Adaza in an interview with GMA News' Bam Allegre for Unang Balita on Friday shared that the President and his common-law wife Cielito "Honeylet" Avanceña will be wearing outfits they previously wore during the ASEAN Summit held last April.

The outfits were chosen by Avanceña and are inspired by Maranao culture and the crisis in Marawi.

"Kasi ang mga Maranaos are very artistic," Adaza explained. "And then, mahilig siya sa mga carvings sa wood, so I wanted to use an okir pattern. An okir is geometric and flowy design of a leaf or a vine. Parang swirling siya, with different vibrant colors."

Avanceña has chosen to wear a green Filipiniana, but an alternate dress featuring the inaul fabric was also presented.

Duterte, meanwhile, will be wearing a Piña Jusi Barong Tagalog with vine and geometric pattern embroidery. — Aya Tantiangco/RSJ/KVD, GMA News
