KinoFest 2024: German films to screen in Mandaluyong mall starting September 26

KinoFest, the German film festival, is returning for its third edition!

KinoFest 2024, under the theme "Global Ties, Personal Journeys," will be featuring the newest German films released from 2021 to 2024.

In Manila, KinoFest 2024 will run from September 26 to 29 at the Shangri-La Plaza, Red Carpet Cinemas, Cinema 3. The film festival is free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

KinoFest 2024 will showcase seven recent German films, as well as a curated program, KinoFest Special, which will feature five films that honor Germany and the Phlilippines' cinematic and creative collaborations.

KinoFest 2024 will kick off on Thursday with the screening of Jonathan Glazer's 2023 drama, "The Zone of Interest." The film received Best Interntional Feature Film at the Academy Awards and follows the story of Rudolf Hoss, the commandant of Auschwitz, as he and his wife try to live with their family beside the concentration camp that Rudolf helped build.  

The other German films that will be screened are "The Amazing Maurice" by Toby Genkel, "Franky Five Star" by Birgit Möller, "Life is Not a Competition... But I'm Winning" by Julia Fuhr Mann, "No Hard Feelings" by Faraz Shariat, "The Teacher's Lounge" by Ilker Çatak, and "The Theory of Everything" by Tim Kroger.

Meanwhile, the KinoFest Special will be held on Sept. 28, starting with a discussion with Filipino filmmakers Cris Bringas ("Huling Palabas"), Moira Lang ("Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros"), and Alex Poblete ("The Ebb of Forgetting"). The talk will be moderated by archivist, filmmaker, and musician Mariah Reodica.

Four shorts will be screened afterward, namely "City of Flowers," by Xeph Suarez, "Filipiñana" by Rafael Mendoza, "Hito" by Stephen Lopez, "I don't want to be just a memory" by Sarnt Utamachote, and the feature-length film "Huling Palabas" by Ryan Espinosa Machado.

Rounding up the KinoFest Special is the feature-length film "Huling Palabas" by Ryan Espinosa Machado.

The annual KinoFest is organized by non-profit cultural association Goethe-Institut. This year's festival is a joint event comprising eight Goethe-Instituts in Southeast Asia and New Zealand.

Aside from the Philippines, KinoFest 2024 will also be held in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam this September until November.
