SHS students in Bulacan develop bicycle that can create recycled paper, pencils

Three senior high school students in Bulacan have developed a bicycle that can create recycled paper and pencils. A motor attached to its wheel can also power a Wi-Fi modem, as well as charge cellphones through pedal power.

According to Martin Javier's "Game Changer" segment on "24 Oras," Monday, the bicycle prototype called Project Cycle is composed of three EV3 controllers, motors, and touch sensors.

"Why not recycle po kung ano pa 'yung meron tayo to not only help the environment but also the students like us?" said SHS student Aaron James Amar.

He, alongside his peers Danielle Angela De Guzman and Annette Nicole Ambi, developed Project Cycle. A machine attached to the bike can create recycled paper from water lilies and paper that would otherwise go to waste. It is able to blend the materials, which are then sifted and dried to create paper.

The bicycle also has a mechanism that can create recycled pencils with just paper, water, and rice milling industry waste like rice husk or "ipa."

Per Annette, they also attached a motor on the bike's wheel that can power a Wi-Fi modem just by pedalling the bike. It can also be used as a charging station.

This is only the beginning for Project Cycle as patenting of the bicycle is still underway.

"We would like to explore more on the other materials that we can use, sa bike naman po we are planning to make it more stable so that it would reach more places," Danielle shared.
